Scott Farquhar, the billionaire co-founder and co-CEO of Atlassian, shares that more than 40% of the company’s employees now live more than two hours away from an office and choose to work remotely—a significant jump from the 25% reported just two years ago. Forbes, as of December 18, valued Farquhar’s net worth at an impressive $14.2 billion.

1. The Young and the Commuter Enthusiasts

One unexpected revelation for Atlassian was the enthusiasm among its younger employees for the traditional commute. Farquhar observed that contrary to his assumptions, recent graduates and entry-level employees were opting to relocate to cities, aiming to be closer to the company’s offices and coming in every week.

Research indicates that many young professionals find value in the in-office experience, appreciating the networking opportunities, mentorship possibilities, and the chance to receive direct feedback from their managers. The challenge for Atlassian now is finding the delicate balance between accommodating the preferences of younger employees and supporting remote work for the broader team.

Farquhar reflects on this puzzle, stating, “I don’t think we’ve yet worked out what we do for younger employees in the office. Do they require their bosses to come into the office sometimes, too? If so, how frequently? What other support do they need?”

2. Navigating Time Zones: The Global Clock

Working across different time zones has proven to be another significant pain point for Atlassian. Initially, the company allowed employees to work in the time zone of their choosing, with manager approval, as long as they resided in one of the 13 countries where Atlassian is recognized as a legal entity.

However, Farquhar acknowledges that this approach has its challenges. Allowing exceptions for a few employees to work in vastly different time zones from the rest of their team can lead to decreased happiness at work. The solution? Atlassian has begun introducing restrictions, defining specific time zones for each team, although Farquhar concedes that they haven’t completely nailed down this complex issue yet.

“We’ve had to say no to candidates who couldn’t accommodate their team’s time zone and adjust our location policies so they’re clear and specific,” Farquhar explains.

In some cases, Atlassian has assisted employees in making internal moves to teams aligning with their preferred time zones. However, Farquhar recognizes that this is a temporary fix, and a more sustainable solution is essential.

The Silver Lining: Benefits of Remote Work

While challenges persist, Atlassian has experienced substantial benefits from its foray into remote work. Farquhar highlights two significant advantages: recruitment and retention.

1. Broader Talent Pool

Since implementing its remote work policy, Atlassian has witnessed a remarkable surge in job applications, receiving twice as many for each open role. Annie Dean, Atlassian’s global head of Team Anywhere, notes that this influx includes candidates leaving less flexible tech companies. The company has successfully hired over 4,000 remote employees since 2020.

Farquhar remarks, “We set out a percentage of employees — up to 20% — that we were willing to lose as a result of our remote work policy because it isn’t for everyone. But that just hasn’t panned out.” The software firm now has access to a broader talent pool, with an increase in the number of veterans, spouses of active military members, women, and parents within its workforce.

2. Happier Employees

The most compelling change brought about by remote work, according to Farquhar, is the happiness of employees. Remote work has given individuals the freedom to move closer to family without the need to switch jobs, save money, and gain more control over their workdays.

“It just feels like a much more human way to work,” adds Farquhar.
